"Ode to Surprise" is a hand-sculpted ceramic piece that captures a moment of whimsical revelation. Part functional platter, part expressive mask as wall art, this work features a face frozen in a look of charming wonder. The high-set, bushy brow and wide, expressive eyes give the piece a soulful, curious character that shifts depending on how the light hits its contoured surfaces.
Crafted from Bruce’s White Clay and soda-fired to achieve a one-of-a-kind finish, the surface tells the story of the kiln’s atmosphere—where unpredictable flashes of ash and flame create a rich, variegated patina that can never be replicated.
